Voice Commands and Translation

Your child builds a robot that actually listens to them, speaks back, and translates languages. Built entirely from scratch.

In this module, your child builds a robot that listens, understands, speaks, and translates. They are not just using a voice assistant like Siri or Alexa. They are building one.

It starts with understanding how sound becomes data. Your child programs the robot to respond to spoken words: "forward," "stop," "dance." Then they build a full voice command system with error handling: "I did not understand, please repeat."

The robot learns to talk back. Your child adjusts voice pitch, speed, and emotion. They build a robot that introduces itself differently to each family member. Then they go further: they program the robot as a translator. Speak in English, and it responds in French, Mandarin, or Spanish.

By the end, your child has built their own personal voice assistant from scratch. It accepts commands, answers questions, tells jokes, and speaks multiple languages. In a multilingual city like Coquitlam, this one resonates with every family.

What your child shows you at the end

"Hey Robot!" Personal Voice Assistant

Your child says "Hey robot, go forward!" and it moves. "Sing me a song!" and it plays music. "What is the weather?" and it fetches live data and reads it aloud. "Translate hello to French" and it speaks the translation.

What you see: Your child casually talking to a robot that understands and responds, and they built the whole thing.

What your child feels: "I built my own Alexa. Except mine is a robot that moves."

The Translator Bot

The robot becomes a multilingual translator. Speak in English, and it responds in Mandarin, French, or Spanish. Kids can show grandparents: "Watch, my robot speaks your language!"

What your child will experience

Teach a robot to hear

Your child programs the robot to recognize spoken words and respond to voice commands.

Build a voice command system

They say "go forward" and it moves. They say "dance" and it dances. Built entirely by your child.

Make the robot talk back

The robot speaks, adjusts its voice, and introduces itself differently to each person.

Language translation

Speak in English and the robot responds in French, Mandarin, or Spanish. Perfect for multilingual families.

Sound classification

Train the robot to tell the difference between a clap, a snap, and a whistle, then respond to each one.

Present a voice assistant

The final project is a personal AI assistant that accepts commands, answers questions, and speaks multiple languages.
